Michael König was born in Mutlangen, Germany. In 1994, he debuted in Ludwigshafen with I due Foscari by Verdi conducted by August Everding and Marcello Viotti. In 1997, he won the Meistersinger contest in Nuremberg and in 1998 he won the Union Opera Competition. Numerous engagements ensued, for instance Hans in Die Verkaufte Braut by Smetana at the Glyndebourne Festival Opera. These were followed by guest appearances at the Staatstheater Stuttgart, Oper Frankfurt, Theater Basel, Staatsoper Hannover, and Opera Bastille in Paris. In 2003–2004, he performed Katja Kabanova in Frankfurt and Die Verkaufte Braut in Stuttgart, Freischütz in Vienna and Jenufa in Hamburg which was followed by a new production of Fidelio at the Oper Frankfurt, Lady Macbeth von Mzensk and Fidelio in Paris. He completed the season with Freischütz in Hamburg and a new production of Lohengrin in Frankfurt. In 2009, he debuted as the Kaiser in Die Frau ohne Schatten at the Frankfurt Opera and Freischütz at the Hamburgische Staatsoper. Future engagements include: Dvorak’s Requiem in Dresden in 2010, a new production of Chowantschina in Hamburg and Beethoven’s 9th in Montreal, the Ariadne debut with Bacchus at the Zurich Opera, as well as Lady Macbeth von Mzensk and Mahagonny at the Teatro Real Madrid and Florentinische Tragoedie in Toronto, among others.
